  Beware of roofing scamers
Comox Valley RCMP want to remind the public to be wary of the "passing by your neighbourhood" home repair pitch.
An elderly Comox couple were scammed out of $9200 after a "salesman" came to their door.
The male stated he does protective coating for asphalt shingles and other jobs.
He attended their home in December of 2007 and returned again in March of 2008 and charged them again. The reciept
showed work for the same thing that was done in December.
If you have work to be done, get an estimate from a reputable company. Don't be afraid to have door to door salesmen
provide some identification as to who they are. A business card is not identification.
For more information on scams or if you want to check out a business, go to the Better Business Bureau website at VI.BBB.ORG
This file is still under investigation by the Comox Valley RCMP

B.C. Law Holds Parents Financially Responsible

If a child takes, damages, or destroys the property of another person, a parent of that child may find
themselves on the hook for damages, plus interest, and court costs. The Parental Responsibility Act
allows victims of property damage, like graffiti, to seek damages via Small Claims Court. The legislation
applies to youth under the age of 18, at which point they become an adult under the law.

Local police and city staff have been discussing this law and how it may be used to combat the problem
of graffiti and property damage currently experienced in the Comox Valley.

According to Cst. Pierre VEZINA of the Comox Valley RCMP Youth Detail Unit, this is a community
problem. Parents are a part of the community and therefore part of the solution. Taking steps to exercise
reasonable supervision over a child will limit the parent's liability under this law. Therefore the Act
encourages parents to be actively involved in the supervision of their children.

Graffiti, broken fences, and other criminal acts are a problem. The Parental Responsibility Act is one
more tool in an effort to curb this community issue.
