TIPS ON TIPS
Comox Valley Crime Stoppers receives hundreds of anonymous tips every year and is grateful for each one of them. Every tip is reviewed by our experienced co-ordinators and the useful ones are passed on to the police. But many tips are not useful because they lack sufficient information. So what makes for a great tip? It depends on the type of criminal offence. For tips regarding fugitives or wanted persons a good tip should contain the “what” what has occurred or is known to the tipster, “who” (name of person), the “where” (they can be found) and the “when” (they will be at that location). For most other tips we would like to know the who, what, where and when but also, if known, the “how” and sometimes the “why”. If you don’t know all these elements, please send us the tip anyway and we will determine if it contains enough information to be used. Take care to ensure the information in your tip does not reveal who you are. But in the event that it does our co-ordinators will do their best to remove this part of the tip before it is passed on to the investigators. Don’t forget that both internet tips and text tips allow for photos to be attached. If you are the victim of a crime, Crime Stoppers is not the correct forum, report it to the police.
Keep those tips coming in and together we can make the Comox Valley a safer place.
