Catalytic converter thefts in the Comox Valley

Fifteen catalytic converters have been reported stolen in the Comox Valley since May 1, 2021 compared to 5 reports in the month of April. The rise in these thefts is occurring all over the province, which is likely due to an increase in the value of the precious metals contained within the integral auto part.

Prevention Tips

  • Park inside your garage, in a well-lit area, or an area with video surveillance.
  • Report all suspicious activity to police. It takes a little bit of time to steal a catalytic converter. At night, thieves will often use a flashlight as they steal which will draw the attention of potential witnesses.
  • Park in such a way that makes it difficult to access the underside of your vehicle. For example, against a wall or alongside other vehicles.
  • Have your mechanic etch an identification number into the catalytic converter so that it is easily identifiable - this might make it harder to sell and easier to identify if recovered.
