Comox Valley police are looking for the person or persons responsible for mischief to and theft from a local sporting goods store. On June 23 at about 6:35 AM an associate of Happy's Source for Sports on 6Th street in Courtenay called to report that there was diesel fuel escaping into the city drainage system. Members attended and it was ascertained that unknown culprits had stolen a 30 foot piece of 3/8 inch copper pipe used for transferring diesel fuel from an outside tank to the store. Between 250 and 500 liters of the fuel are suspected to have drained into the drainage system which eventually empties into the Puntledge River. HAZMAT personnel were immediately notified and they attended to deal with the spill. Forensic ident section also attended and evidence was gathered froim the scene. The copper wire valued at $1.50 per foot is minor in monetary value compared to the high cost of environmental damage that occurred as a result of this wanton mischief and theft.
